The person who chooses the field of cardiology or study of the heart has the opportunity to work in many capacities. Not only do medical doctors have opportunities waiting for them in this field, other health professionals such as registered nurses, cardiac cath techs, EKG techs and Echocardiogram techs have access to an abundance of job opportunities in this field.

Cardiology jobs are, and will continue to be in high demand. Doctors who choose to embark on a career in cardiology will, after graduating from an accredited medical school, need to pursue a cardiology residency at a hospital that can last for up to five or more years. Cardiology jobs are not only available at hospitals, they are also available at offices and outpatient settings as well.

Registered nurses who choose cardiology jobs can gain valuable experience and education by working in a hospital. Not only do the nurses benefit from a competitive salary and benefits package, they also have a more flexible schedule than the traditional hospital staff nurse that works on a regular floor. Many cardiology nurses choose to work in a cardiac cath lab where hours of operation are usually limited to the daytime. Nurses, therefore can eliminate the need to work evenings and nights. Registered nurses may also choose employment in cardiac rehab facilities. Cardiology jobs in cardiac rehab program facilities also offer flexible scheduling and daytime hours. Some evening hours may be required to accommodate the work schedule of the patients, but the employee will rarely, if ever work the midnight shift.

EKG and Echo techs can also enjoy the benefits of cardiology jobs. There is a need for qualified and competent EKG and Echo technicians in hospitals. Technicians in this capacity enjoy working in the emergency room, in the outpatient and surgical departments as well as at the patient’s bedside. The EKG and Echocardiogram technicians must undergo training before they can function in the hospital environment. Many community colleges offer cardiac technician certification programs and offer not only text book education, but hands on experience as well. Read the rest of this entry »

Cardiology Locums offer these physicians an opportunity to more or less test out different working environments before they commit to one. Cardiology Locums also allow a young cardiology physician the opportunity to specialize in more advanced areas of cardiology and work in a locum position at the same time in order to earn an income.

There are Cardiology Locums offered in every part of the country. Some cardiology physicians rotate locums, traveling from one place to another spending a month or more in hospitals, clinics and private offices in almost every state. This gives the cardiology physician the opportunity to more or less sample different cardiology practices, while enjoying the lifestyles, culture, nightlife, etc. in different parts of the country. Younger cardiologists like the idea of traveling and getting a taste of a variety of cardiology practices before they settle down in one place as a full-time staff member.

Cardiology Locum also attract those cardiologist who are nearing but not yet ready to retire. Cardiology Locums afford an older physician the opportunity to work using all the valuable cardiology skills learned, but at a pace the older physician prefers. Cardiology Locums are usually flexible and be be adapted to the needs of the cardiologist filling the position. An older, semi retired cardiologist might taken on a six month Cardiology Locum in the same hospital where he or she was once full-time. Or, work in another part of the country as a Cardiology Locum for six months and then take the next six month on vacation. For example, a cardiologist from the east in a state that has cold winters, might prefer to serve a Cardiology Locum in Florida for six months and take the next six months off to enjoy the pleasures that the warm winters of Florida bring.

There are not many hospitals, clinics, and other medical facilities that aren’t short of staff, or are undergoing a hiring freeze, or have cardiologists who are on an extended vacation, ill or on sabbatical for a year or two. That is why there are so many Cardiology Locums positions now available. And because a cardiologist who fills a locum position has to have the same training, certifications and licenses of regular staff physicians, he or she is usually considered as part of the staff and, often times, is asked to stay on once the locum has ended.
